Google’s Policies on CBD Advertising: What You Need to Know

Google’s current policies on advertising CBD products

In Dec. 2022 Google announced that starting Jan. 20, 2023 Google Ads policies will no longer prohibit all hemp and CBD ads in California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. However there are still limitations for advertisers.

On Jan. 20, 2023, the ban was revoked for:

  • FDA-approved pharmaceutical products containing CBD.
  • Topical, hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC.

Businesses that advertise CBD-infused topicals must be certified by LegitScript, which requires submitting samples for laboratory testing as well as a third-party Certificate of Analysis. Of course Google then still has the last word and wants to certify your business themselves before your officially allowed to run CBD ads with Google.

But wait, don’t get to excited. Supplements, food additives and inhalted products will still remain prohibited under Google’s Ads regulations. Also not all ad formats are available to advertisers such as YouTube Masthead.

But here is some good news: CBD will be removed from the Google’s list of unapproved pharmaceuticals and supplements.

And yes, that is kind of a weird stage we’re in. CBD gets removed from the list of unapproved pharmaceuticals and supplements but your not allowed to run ads for CBD supplements. If that’s not frustrating, I don’t what is.

But hey, at least we’re seeing some move movement from Google here.

(There are also some loop wholes around the CBD ban on Google. We’ll touch on that later…)

How Google’s Ads CBD policies vary across different  countries and regions

Google’s Ads CBD policies vary significantly across different countries and regions. For example, in the United States, Google Ads allows, as mentioned above, for the promotion of hemp-derived CBD products as long as they are registered with the appropriate authorities and comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Sounds super easy but as we know, there can be many hurtles.

However, in some other countries such as Canada, it is illegal to advertise CBD products.

Additionally, certain European countries like France have prohibited the advertising of any cannabis-related products.

The variation in Google’s Ads CBD policies is due to the fact that different countries and regions have different laws regarding the use and distribution of CBD or other cannabinoid containing products.

Therefore, it is important for companies to research local laws before attempting to advertise their product on Google Ads (or any other platform) in order to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.

Strategies for advertising CBD on Google and Maximizing Your Reach: Tips and Tricks for Advertising CBD on Google

Google Ads: Google Ads is a powerful advertising platform that allows businesses to reach customers in search results, YouTube videos, mobile apps, and websites across the web. With Google Ads, businesses can create ads that show up when someone searches for a particular term or phrase related to their product or service. Additionally, businesses can use Google Ads to target certain demographic groups or interests with tailored messages and images.

Google Shopping: Google Shopping is an online shopping platform where shoppers can find and compare products from multiple retailers. Businesses can create advertisements for specific products or services and display them in relevant search results when someone searches for those keywords. This helps customers easily find what they’re looking for and encourages them to make a purchase from the business running the ad.

Display Advertising: Display Advertising allows businesses to place graphic ads on websites around the web. These ads are usually created using images and text which are then embedded into webpages. With Display Advertising, businesses can target specific audiences based on demographics, location, interests and more – allowing them to reach potential customers who may not be searching for their products or services directly.

Video Ads: Video Ads allow businesses to create interactive video content that appears on YouTube videos, websites and other platforms across the web. Video Ads help engage viewers while also providing an opportunity for businesses to showcase their product or service in an entertaining way – making it more likely that viewers will take action after viewing the ad.

Tips on how to optimize your ads for the best results

  1. Target the right audience: Make sure you are targeting the right audience for your ads. Research and understand who your target customers are, what their needs are, and what resonates with them.
  2. Use relevant keywords: Use keywords that are relevant to your product or service in order to increase visibility.
  3. Test different ad formats: Try out different ad formats to see which performs best. For example, test both video and image ads to see which one works better for your campaign goals.
  4. Invest in A/B testing: Experiment with different versions of ads to determine which ones perform best for your audience and objectives. A/B testing helps you optimize for higher conversions and lower costs-per-click (CPC).
  5. Track performance metrics: Keep track of important metrics such as impressions, clicks, conversions, cost-per-click (CPC), click-through rate (CTR), etc., so you can make informed optimization decisions.

Best practice on how to create ad copy and ad targeting

  • When creating ad copy and ad targeting, it’s important to keep in mind your target audience.
  • It’s also important to use keywords that will bring the right people to your advertisement.
  • Additionally, it’s best practice to create catchy headlines that will draw attention from potential customers.
  • You can also use A/B testing to determine which version of the advertisement works best with your target audience.
  • Finally, be sure to include a call-to-action at the end of your ad copy so that customers know what action you want them to take upon seeing the ad.

By following these best practices, you can ensure that your ad copy and targeting are effective and reach the right people.

Hemp and Cannabis marketers should be aware of the reality that major social media platforms like Facebook and Google, either still have discriminatory policies towards hemp and cannabis firms or just don’t want to deal with the legal headaches from regulators. Anyhow, it is still not allowed or very difficult run advertising for your legit businesses on google, youtube, facebook and instagram, tiktok, etc.

All social media platforms such as Google and Facebook have strict policies on cbd ads. Neither of them allow ads for cannabis businesses like one would expect in 2023.

If you’re not certified by LegitScript and Google and still want to run ads for your cbd, hemp or cannabis business, you’re pretty much left with trying to “fly under the radar”. Meaning you cannot and should not to mention ANY cannabis or hemp related keywords in your ad, media and on your landing page. Don’t use keywords like CBD, cannabidiol, weed, 420, cannabis coffee shops, etc. if you don’t want to get banned from Google.

Creating Compelling Ad Copy for Your Cannabis, CBD or Hemp Products and Services

Creating compelling ad copy for your CBD products is crucial in capturing the attention of potential customers and driving conversions. But with so many other companies vying for the same audience, how do you make your ad stand out? The key is to focus on the benefits of your product, rather than just listing its features.

For example, instead of saying “Our CBD oil is made with high-quality hemp extract,” say “Say goodbye to stress and anxiety with our premium CBD oil, made with the finest hemp extract on the market.”

This communicates the same information, but in a way that speaks directly to the customer’s pain points and desires.

Another tip for crafting effective ad copy is to use a clear, consistent tone and brand voice. This can help establish trust and credibility with your target audience. Whether you choose a more serious, informative tone or a playful, conversational one, make sure it aligns with your brand identity and resonates with your target market.

And don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it! Remember, you are advertising a product that is associated with relaxation and well-being, so incorporating a sense of humor or a playful tone can help your ad stand out and make it more memorable.

Creating Compelling Ad Copy without using ANY “Hemp” or “Cannabis” related keywords

Are you looking for creative ways to advertise your cannabis, hemp or CBD products without using any cannabis, hemp or CBD-related terms?

If so, then you’ve come to the right place! Let me show you how to craft compelling ad copy that will grab your target audience’s attention.

The key to successful ad copy is to write in a funny and entertaining way. Think up clever puns, jokes and metaphors that are related to your product in some way.

For example, if you’re selling CBD oil, try something like “Get ready to experience a higher level of relaxation” or “Relax with some natural stress relief”. Get creative and playful – your customers will love it.

Another way to create engaging ad copy is by telling a story related to your product or brand. This could be anything from how you came up with your idea to how it’s changed people’s lives.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s relatable, interesting and fun!

Targeting the Right Audience: How to Reach Your Ideal Customers

As a hemp or cannabis business, reaching your ideal customers can be tricky. Sure, you know who your target audience is – but how do you get them to pay attention? With the right setup, you can get your message out there without even having to use any hemp or cannabis-related keywords. Here’s how:

First, identify what your customers are interested in and find other related search terms that don’t contain any hemp or cannabis words. For example, if you’re targeting people interested in wellness, you could use terms like “natural health remedies” or “holistic healing products”.

Then create ads that focus on those keywords and set up campaigns with specific demographic filters so you’re only showing your ads to the people you want to reach.

It’ll take some trial and error, but soon enough you’ll be talking directly to your ideal customers. Who knew it could be so easy?
